High economy, popular. In Vietnam, cocoa trees are suitable for planting in many different ecological regions such as South Central Coast, Southeast, Mekong River Delta and Central Highlands.

Morphological characteristics of cocoa trees

Cocoa trees (Theobroma cacao L.) are native to the Amazon, South America basin. From here, cocoa grows to other countries in Central and South America. In Vietnam, cocoa was introduced very early, following the Western missionaries.

Cocoa tree leaves: evergreen medium, small woody, 4-8m tall, living in natural conditions can be 10-20m high; Good shade, good shade resistance suitable for intercropping cultivation to save land area.

Cocoa pods are usually large, variable, and contain many small particles. In particular, pods of pods can be dried and dried as a food for cattle.

Cocoa beans: have high nutritional value and are often used as ingredients for processing high quality products such as chocolate, cocoa ...

Ecological characteristics of cocoa trees

With wide adaptability and not much technical care requirements, cocoa trees are often grown in vacant areas or greened bare hills, silviculture or intercropping.

Climate: Cocoa trees are suitable for hot tropical climate with much rain and rain. The tree is suitable for an average temperature of 25oC, 85% humidity, an average rainfall of over 1500 mm / year. Cocoa is a tree that likes scattering light (50-60% of natural light intensity), so it is suitable to grow under fruit trees or shade trees. If more than 35 degrees C, the tree starts to wilt, the temperature is too low, causing the tree to stop growing.

Planting soil: trees suitable for many different soil types from red soil, gray soil, ancient alluvial soil, but most suitable for soil with medium to light mechanical composition, pH from 5.5 to 5.8, The cultivation layer is 1-1.5 m thick, easy to drain, has high water holding capacity and rich in organic matter. By cultivating methods (liming, fertilizing organic ...) farmers can help cocoa trees achieve high productivity in less fertile land.

Wind: Cocoa trees are not suitable for areas with strong winds because of weak root systems. If farmers grow cocoa in the area where there is a strong wind, it is necessary to plant more windbreak trees to grow and develop the best trees.

Water: Cocoa trees often flower and develop fruit during the rainy season, when the tree is fully formed. If sufficient water is supplied during the dry season, the cocoa tree may be left year-round.

Shade: Cocoa tree is a shade-loving tree, so it is very suitable for intercropping with other industrial plants such as cashew, banana or other industrial crops.
